Telecoms contracts: are you getting what you’re paying for?

A recent BBC investigation has highlighted concerns from small businesses around lengthy telecoms contracts, equipment rental agreements and unexpected costs.

The investigation looked at cases where business owners said they had been signed into five or seven-year agreements for phone systems and related software, with some facing significant costs to exit their contracts early.

One business owner featured in the investigation said he was paying more than £54,000 over 10 years for five phones and associated software. Other businesses told the BBC they had been unclear about the full cost and length of their agreements when signing up.

The telecoms companies named in the investigation have denied mis-selling and said their pricing, services and contract terms were transparent.

For businesses, the investigation is a useful reminder to look beyond the headline monthly price when choosing a phone system. Before signing a contract, make sure you understand:

  • How long you’re committed for
  • Whether equipment is being purchased or rented
  • The total cost over the full contract term
  • What happens if you want to leave early
  • Which services and features are included
  • Whether upgrades could mean taking on a new agreement

At Fluent, we believe businesses should have a clear understanding of the technology they’re paying for and how it fits their needs, without unnecessary complexity.
